Many view it as morose, but I really love visiting Alcatraz. I love seeing the contrast of the original purpose of the island—to isolate and punish—to the current bird and plant sanctuary, bathed in sunlight, with soft breezes and the sound of happy families. There is decay and remnants of its previous purpose, but we now view it differently and can see its beauty.
